TASK ONE: What is a Trailer? What is a Teaser Trailer?
A trailer is a series of selected scenes which gives the audience a little preview of the film, without giving away too much. It is usually released before the film as a method of publicity.
I will be analysing the following trailers to understand what a trailer's purpose is and how certain conventions are used to establish a trailer.
Suicide Squad Trailer (2016)
I found this trailer very effective as it was suited the genre of action/superhero. I liked how the editing starts off quite slow in the beginning but quickens towards the end, as does the music. I felt like it clearly followed the storyline and gave enough information to make the audience want to watch it but not too much that the plot is given away. Although I would say there wasn't much of a variety of camera angles and shots, a lot of them were typical action shots that were not that interesting, it was mainly the characters that made it more interesting.
10 Cloverfield Lane Trailer (2016)
Out of all the trailers, I enjoyed this trailer the most and found it very effective. The way the music has been distorted and manipulated to make a happy track seem more sinister when the darker scenes appear has really intrigued me. I feel as though the music made the trailer come together, as I also find the cinematography and mise-en-scene very interesting. They are portrayed in a way that creates a lot of enigma codes whilst hardly giving away anything about the plot, especially as there is no voice over and only one line of narration throughout. This is a great way to build up tension and anticipation for the film's release.
Gone Girl Trailer (2014)
I have chosen this trailer as I do not think it is very effective. But I have chosen to look at it as a potential plot idea for our trailer, as we are thinking about doing a thriller. I think this trailer gives too much away about the plot through the flashbacks and narration, I believe that it would've been more effective if they were not included and there was limited narration like in 10 Cloverfield Lane.
The teaser trailer is another type of trailer, it's purpose is to tease the audience before the actual release of the film and the full trailer, in order to build up the anticipation and excitement so that people look forward to the film.
The Secret Life of Pets Teaser Trailer (2016)

As a teaser trailer, I believe that the trailer is very effective in achieving its target audience and its genre. However, I think a little more about the plot or show fewer clips that unnecessarily dragged out the length of the trailer. For example, I think the fact there were six cuts showing the different pets being left by their owners this could have been cut down as the audience probably understood this from the third cut. I also found the scene of the cat trying to resist eating the meat unnecessarily long, although it was funny I don't think it needed to take up 20 seconds of the trailer.
From my analysis I have come to the conclusion of what a trailer should include:
